Long-term interaction with vetted, trained, and engaged adult leaders who are guided by the Scout Oath & Law is the eighth method of Scouting.
Why? Adult Program Leaders, Merit Badge Counselors, etc. provide the kind of sounding board and mentorship that adolescents benefit from as they begin to seek their own identity apart from their parents. Scouting provides a unique opportunity for youth to travel a 3-7 year-long developmental arc with many low-stakes opportunities for youth to make mistakes and learn from them in a safe space.
Experiential learning and the guided reflections to both process and practice problem-solving leads to the development of a world-view and character that are steeped in the principles of the Scout Oath/Law.
Growing healthy, caring humans & responsible citizens who will "pay it forward" and practice servant-leadership in their future communities summarizes the essence of the "Aims of Scouting". Parents Coordinate Service Projects, Adult Leaders hold "Scoutmaster Conferences" and deliver "Scoutmaster Minutes" at the close of meetings, etc.
Troop 204 (Scouts & Troop Committee) endeavors to meet each Scout where they are at by providing extra scaffolding when necessary; we are all different and bring different gifts to this Troop. Our Senior Scouts spend time teaching/mentoring Younger Scouts. Adult leaders coach the Troop's elected youth leaders (the "Patrol Leader's Council" or PLC) so that they can feel the pride of ownership in running their troop.
